ramblings on PHP, SQL, the web, politics, ultimate frisbee and what else is on in my life

Still alive ..

Well there is much to blog. After all I did not blog in ages. Then again there is too much and too little time. So just briefly, I had a great time in Tanzania. Anyone who is considering traveling there feel free to mail me for advice. I also been to the phpconit in Rome last week and gave two talks. Really enjoyed it down there. Very good food of course and various people that I had not met in person yet. Especially meeting Matteo was great and it seems like he will now even become an official contributor to PDO! I also chatted with Stefan a bit about DJing (expect a big announcement - well big for me - in this department soon) and Symfony 2.0 (Liip is currently giving Symfony another look).

Anyways the first one was about PHP 5.3. I think that one went well. I did not have that much time to prepare the slides, so I ended up "stealing" content from Johannes and Scott. I did ask Johannes before hand, I hope Scott approves as well, since I did not manage to catch up with him before my talk. Actually I copied one of his namespace examples and almost made a fool of myself, since back when he did his slides we were still hoping we could use the double colon as a namespace separator.

The other one was quite exciting. Its the first time I did a "cast study" of a real world application. Though in the end I settled on writing cut down examples, though each was much longer than a single slide. So I switched between Keynote (what about adding scrolling to the webview?) and Firefox a lot. Overall it went surprisingly well and I think I managed to bring the fairly heavy content across. So I will be doing this talk again in Berlin. Hopefully to a bigger crowd. Maybe I scared off people with my PHP 5.3 keynote just before, where I had to cut things by 10 mins since we started late which probably caused me to talk too fast. Or maybe the "advanced sql" in the title sounded too scary or well maybe there were simply other more interesting talks.
