What if ..

What if which ever way you turn, you think are seeing a postcard? What if you could take the afternoon off to go skiing? What if you would one day come to assume that every city has a beautiful lake at the center and mountains surrounding? What if every movie would always be shown in the original version without having to go to that single cinema in town that did? Speaking of languages, what if you could get by with whatever language you speak, or just practice one of many languages without having to go an a trip? What if going for a snack after one of the monthly user group meetings, feels more like a speakers dinner at a conference? Yes, then you must be working in Zurich, the up and coming PHP capital of the world! :)

Seriously, all I can say its awesome down here and there are a ton of awesome companies looking for top notch PHP developers. Sizes and types greatly vary. From the small development team, to large international organizations, from consulting companies, to companies providing a specific service or product. From companies solely focused on PHP to those also meddling with Java and what not. So knowingly leaving you with out specifics, just email me your CV if you are interested and a short paragraph explaining what type of work you are looking for and I will give you a short overview of employers that might fit what you are looking for. Getting a work permit for people with EU citizenship is super easy these days, for all others it might be trickier.

Anyways, this blog post is the aggregation of promises I gave various people that I would look around if there is some PHP talent interested in a job in Zurich (actually some of these jobs are also in other areas of Switzerland).

Update: I should also mention that I am also fine with growing the MySQL DBA community in Zurich and there are plenty of jobs to go around in that department as well.

Re: What if ..

Yep, Zurich rules. And I don't know, if you made any promises to us, but we're still looking too -> http://www.liip.ch/jobs

(and sorry, for the blatant job ad here :) )

Re: What if ..

Nice to hear that you (still) like Zurich. So I'm shameless to: We still hunting php-cracks http://techblog.tilllate.com/job-offering-software-engineer/ (or in german a bit more up to date http://techblog.tilllate.com/software-entwickler-gesucht/).

("The others", as far as I know them, might be nearly as cool as we are, so you might be send you CV to headhunter Lukas anyway ;-)

A saying in the USSR: All people are equal, only some are more equal than others.

What about the "new EU member countries"?

Re: What if ..

No worries, the above two are of course on my list of cool potential employers. But there are several other alternatives as well. It all depends on what kind of company your looking for. Liip would be a small (but definatly not tiny either!) consulting company, while tilllate is a company providing a portal for the partying youth of Europe. But I could quickly name 3 other companies that are also looking and have something unique to offer. You know, I just want the next webtuesday to feel like the speakers dinner at OSCON :)

Re: What if ..

@eastEUperson: Good point, AFAIK there is a decision open about extending this regulation across all of the EU, including the new member states. I am not sure what the status is there, but I will try to find out. My employer also has offices in Bukarest, in case that is an alternative for you.

Re: What if ..

I don't know how speakers dinner at OSCON is, was never there. But I think Big-G is hiring too and will make a nice buffet next week for the webtuesday.

Re: What if ..

@eastEUperson: Ok, so citizens from the new member states as of now still need to file for a work permit just like all non EU citizens. I talked to the HR person at my employer and they told me that they are currently going through the process of filing for a standard work permit for a candidate from Lithuania. Will be interesting to learn how pain-ful/less this process will be.

still need to file for a work permit

read the same hear, wich means UK/Ireland are getting more IT brains than ze swiss.

Dears:
Have you heard heard about the lawyers / consultants all over the net offering you EU citizenships [mainly Czech, Estonia, Spain and Holland] for a reasonable amount and in a couple of months?

I would love to beleive them, but I am afraid I may be taken for ride.

Any idea anyone?
Thanks
